    Cell carriers…get it together!

Ok, let me just affirm that I hate how the current cell phone texting system is setup. Firstly, the pricing is ridiculous. The normal text message is, at most, around 0.15KB. That means you can send six text messages using just 1KB. In other terms that means you can send 6,000 texts using just 1MB of data.

Now, how much do cell phone companies charge for texting? Most have a plan of 250 texts for $5/month, 500 for $10, 1500 for $15, and unlimited for around $20. These are all extremely overpriced. Even if you compare the data usage of a text message, the companies charge $1.99 per-MB data used (net browsing). Even though this is still overpriced, using this logic, you should be able to send/receive 12,000 texts for $1.99 a month. But they do not view it this way. Instead, the choose to secretly gouge the customer and act like a text message uses up so much data on their network….come on….it’s a few bytes of data.

That is my first gripe. My second problem is the lack of cross-carrier notification on arrival of your text messages. I hate, hate, hate when you are wondering if someone got your text or if they are just choosing to not respond. On Verizon, if you text to someone else of Verizon, most phones will tell you if the message was successfully delivered to the recipient. However, sending texts across networks does not allow for this option. I really wish that all the carriers would implement an easy system for the sender to check if this message was delivered, if the text failed, or is lost in the system. It would clear up so many problems related to, “Did you get my text?”. I hate that. Get it together cell companies.

That’s my rant for the day.
